How We Can All Celebrate Mothers

It’s important to take time to celebrate the selfless desires that motherhood embodies. But in a world where sin exists, the term “mother” doesn’t only represent good things, unfortunately. Even in the best cases, mothers and their children are far from perfect. As long as we’re in this life, there will always be people who don’t have mothers, who were mistreated by mothers, who grieve that they aren’t mothers, and have struggled with motherhood. At this point, you might be thinking this is getting depressing. Aren’t we supposed to be talking about how we can all celebrate mothers? To understand the true value of mothers, we first need to get real.

The world’s definition of a mother leaves it up to us to give it deeper meaning. According to Merriam Webster, the word “mother” simply means “a female parent.” While they’re not wrong, the Bible shows us how much more God’s definition of “mother” means. God’s Word illustrates a profound purpose for every part of His intelligent design, and our definitions can never fully describe God’s intentions. From beginning to end, God holds a plan for humanity that brings us to Him. That means motherhood is not just about bringing people into the world; it’s about showcasing the dynamics of God’s love. His love allows us to give and receive motherly love outside of biological relationships. God designed family roles to reflect His relational nature, which tells us that He wants us to experience the joy of deep connection. Through mothers, God shares His comfort, nurture, and unconditional commitment.

“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.” - Isaiah 66:13

Yes, evil can corrupt every good thing in this life, but God’s love will remain pure. That is a love that speaks through all that God creates. So, we should celebrate mothers not only for what they’re called to do as individuals but also for the overarching message that God conveys through their character. We can see some examples of the qualities and complexities of motherhood in the Bible:

What is an example of motherly love that has impacted your life? It could have come from your mother or someone else who offered selfless guidance. Whether you realize it or not, motherhood has affected you because it is part of who God is. Our Creator has a reason for all He does, and we are all meant to experience a mother’s love.

Depending on your situation, here are some ways you can support and honor mothers:

We’ll start with an obvious one - Appreciate the moms in your life.
Whether it’s your mother, mother-in-law, or neighbor, you probably know a mom who your recognition would encourage. Even if it’s a teacher or another motherly figure, it’s a blessing to give back to someone who has served with kindness. Besides offering your time, you can do something fun like make a journal of all the things you love about them, treat them to an activity that excites them, throw them a party (if that’s their thing), or simply ask what you can do for them.

Lift up the moms in the world.
We take for granted the difference that moms make around the world. If you want to support mothers on a broader scale, you can give to (or volunteer for) an organization like MOPS, Compassion International, or Bridge of Hope. You can also research the needs in your community and see how you can participate in outreach through your local church.

Moms: Recognize your worth.
Whether you have your own children or have taken others under your wing, you matter more than you know. You are an irreplaceable part of God’s plan to influence others. When you make mistakes or feel overwhelmed, know that you can surrender to God’s guidance. You aren’t supposed to have superpowers to handle all on your own. Give yourself rest when you need it, and don’t be afraid to seek fellowship and feedback from others. And remember, not only on special occasions, you can celebrate the love God shows the world through you!
